3 Weeks to Better Communication - Learn More!
Hi Reader,
We had a Parent in our online course community ask on a recent call:
Is there a parent out there who hasn't felt this at one time or another?
This family is new to our Conscious Communication Series, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts from our monthly webinar with you.
Power struggles are easy to fall into - and every family is different. No one magic answer fits every kid and every situation.
We want to learn how to look behind the curtain for more clues to what our children need.
Let's walk through the steps in "What to Do About Backtalk" here.
I give my kid a lot of "power" over the years.
I rarely force her to do things (safety + health aside). And she has always had the freedom to say "No" without blame, shame, judgment, or guilt. (conscious - no one is perfect).
Of course, that doesn't mean I don't encourage or motivate her, and it certainly doesn't mean that there aren't boundaries. 🌱
🔎 It means - I take my feelings, judgments, fears, and opinions out of the mix when they don't belong to see what she really needs.
I don't always get it right, and I'm a healing-from-an-abusive-childhood work-in-progress-parent. But if you ask me now (she's 17), "Was it worth it to give her so much "control?"
I'd say, "💯,000% YES!"
👉🏻 What are some areas that we often force control where we need to build self-discipline?
- Is their room neat and organized?
- Is their homework complete?
- Are they doing their chores?
Or...
- Self-expression
- Time management
- Hobbies
- Friends
💫 The best gift I could have given her was the autonomy to make decisions for herself. (I'll still be here to make her food, though, to be clear. Actually, her dad will. We all know I CAN cook. But I don't. 🤪)
It's given me so much more influence in her life now that she's a young adult because I didn't force control early on.
